Well, I am doing this a bit early this year but here it goes. 2009 represents our 9th year that we have been here. It is hard to believe we have been here for that long. It seems just like yesterday that I started the SPoT.

2008 was a very tough year for the SPoT. We had numerous issues with our servers which caused some issues with people getting on to the site. This had a real impact on our traffic. We recently changed out the Hard Drives on the one of the servers and it looks like that may have solved the problem. Unfortunately it was a bit too late. With traffic being down for most of the year and because of the state of the economy our revenue has seriously gone down because of the loss of Advertisers who had to cut back on their budgets as well as SPottie Club Memberships being down as well. Revenue is down so much at this at this point that I can no longer justify the expense of $709 a month for two servers.

So in the next couple of days the SPoT is going to be closed for a bit as we make the migration back to a single server configuration. Hopefully it will only be for a couple of hours and the time it takes to update our DNS. We will be going to a brand new lease on a brand new server. Hopefully with a more powerful box we will not see an issue with not having a dual server setup. The down side is I will be back in a 12 month lease agreement. This means I am going to be on the hook, no matter what happens

Core2Quad Q6600
2GB RAM
2 x 146GB SAS drives (RAID1)
KVM Over IP
Redundant HSRP SSL VPN
DOTDEFENDER™ Firewall (Free with cPanel servers) Full System Security Lock Down 50GB Offsite R1Soft Backup 100% Uptime SLA Full Management
-----------------
Monthly: $339.95 x 12 = $4,079.40 for the year.

This is just the costs of the actual server.

Club Memberships are more important than ever. A $25 annual Membership goes a long way to cover the costs of running the SPoT. While we try to keep most of the SPoT free, if it wasn’t for the support of the Club Memberships I simply could not afford to keep the SPoT going. Memberships have always been a vital reason the SPoT is here. I know times are tough for everyone but in addition to server costs we have licensing, federal, state and local taxes, administration costs, accounting fees and the list goes on. So if you love the SPoT please help out and chip in. It is appreciated.

On a more positive note we held our SPottie Idol Contest for 2008 and I am happy to announce that Chuck Williams ended up as the SPottie Idol for 2008. It could not have gone to a more deserving member. Congratulations to the following runner ups. OvalNut, pbc, and Mike_TX. You guys have always been big supporters of the SPoT and you deserve the recognition.

Thank you to Axiom, SVS, Carada and Best Deal Cables for their generous support and the prizes they provided for the contest.

I hope all of you have a great 2009 and once again thanks for all of you that have supported the SPoT over the last 9 years as well as future support as we move forward. 2009 is going to be a rebuilding year for the SPoT and your contributions and continued support will be very important.
Check out what Secrets of Home Theater HiFi had to say about our HDMI Cables with Locking Tab Connector:

"With all the discussion about how HDMI plugs and jacks are not very robust, Best Deal Cables came up with a solution.
They put a connecting tab on the plug, which you can see on top of the plug in the photo below."

"Well, that's fine and dandy", you might say, "but my SSP doesn't have a slot for that tab."

Ah, but Best Deal Cables thought of that too. They include two little screws that have a tiny ball on the end.

What you do is remove the mounting screw above the HDMI jack that holds it in place . . .

. . . then you replace that screw with the ball screw that Best Deal supplies with the cable.
The tab will not only hold the plug in the jack, but it will stabilize it as well, from flexing. This will help to prevent damage to the HDMI jacks that has plagued many users, including yours truly.

Best Deal does not have a 50 footer, but they supplied their 10 meter cable which is almost 33 feet. It worked fine, although it is a bit stiffer than some of the other cables. However, what makes this cable special - besides the killer price - is the locking tab. Finally, manufacturers are starting to beef up the HDMI connector!

Check out what our customers have to say about BestDealCables:

"Jason,

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new Best Deal Cables HDMI cables. I was skeptical about the locking pin concept because I was hesitant about removing any factory screws from my components; however, I bit the bullet and gave it a try. It was so easy! You simply remove the small screw above the component’s HDMI input and screw in the locking ball included with your HDMI cables, and viola! What a terrific idea. Unfortunately the PS3 doesn’t use the standard screw, but my DVR, TV, receiver and HD DVD player do. This new locking system has saved me so much frustration over the past few days as I integrated my new receiver into my home theater. Space is tight where my components are housed and this innovative locking system has kept my HDMI cables firmly secured into place even as I shifted my components around. I only wish Sony had used the standard HDMI screw in their PS3 because my HDMI cable loosens from the PS3’s input whenever I shift it around. Also, the picture and sound on my HD components looks and sounds great! Keep up the quality work! I will definitely return to Best Deal Cables for any future cable needs."

CITY, FL (9/17/08) -- Wireworld has introduced a new flagship
audio interconnect cable featuring Composite Dielectric Technology
(CDT™) and the world’s first molded carbon fiber connector
housing. This cable represents a new addition at the top of the
brand's line, rather than an upgrade of an existing model.

"Over the years we've come to realize there is no one
perfect insulating material," said David Salz, President of
Wireworld. "Each has advantages and disadvantages. By
applying composite materials technology we've managed to formulate
a proprietary dielectric that exceeds what we previously believed
was possible. This is easily the finest interconnect cable we've
              ever heard."

Wireworld's Platinum Eclipse interconnect marks the first use
of molded carbon fiber in a cable connector. By eliminating the
eddy currents and stray field effects generated by conventional
metal connector shells while still providing effective shielding,
these unique plugs reveal finer details and natural acoustic
ambience in the sound. The connectors also utilize silver-clad OFC
contacts and Wireworld’s patented silicone rubber tensioning
device to provide the lowest contact resistance available.

The Platinum Eclipse interconnect’s four flat conductors are
made of Ohno Continuous Cast solid silver of the highest purity
available, 99.99997% (6N). The internal design is the DNA Helix
geometry utilized by the other interconnects in Wireworld’s
Eclipse series, however its flat conductors contain substantially
more silver than the lesser models, and they are also thinner,
which reduces phase shift. The Platinum Eclipse interconnect also
utilizes a new innovation that we call Composite Dielectric
Technology, which utilizes a proprietary mixture of specialized
materials to minimize noise and dielectric interaction more
effectively than any conventional insulation material. CDT
improves low-level resolution, focus and micro-dynamics to levels
beyond the capability of conventional insulation materials.

The Wireworld Platinum Eclipse interconnect line will be
available in October, in both RCA unbalanced and XLR balanced
configurations with prices starting at $2,995 for a one meter
              pair.

Wireworld, which was founded by David Salz in 1992, offers a
broad spectrum of very high quality speaker cables, audio and
video interconnects, digital audio interconnects, power cords,
digital A/V cables, and plasma/LCD control cables. The company has
an excellent reputation among audio and home theater enthusiasts
for producing high quality cables based on the use of objective
perceptual testing, patented designs, premium materials, and
              exceptional manufacturing quality.

any wall or ceiling regardless of finish material (plaster, wood, stone, tile,

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (9/18/08) -- Integra, the first company to
build audio-video receivers designed specifically for custom installers,
has announced that it is now shipping two new receivers engineered to
meet demanding technical requirements of THX's new Ultra2 Plus and
Select2 Plus certification standards. Both have 1080p video upscaling
        and advanced two-zone capabilities.

The Integra
DTR-7.9 is THX Ultra2 Plus certified for large-room applications
with a powerful 130 watts-per-channel amplifier, five HDMI inputs, and
upscaling for component video inputs. The Integra
DTR-6.9 is THX Select2 Plus certified with 100 watts per channel and
four HDMI inputs. Both include the new THX Loudness Plus processing
which improves the listener's aural experience at moderate and low
        volume levels.

These receivers use Audyssey's highly regarded MultEQ room correction
technology to automatically set optimal speaker levels and time delay
for any given room. They also add Audyssey's new Dynamic EQ circuitry,
which corrects the surround channel equalization and level relative to
        volume levels.

As the audio and video control centers for advanced home theater
installations, these receivers are fully compatible with HDMI v. 1.3a,
including 1080p and Deep Color™ 36-bit video signals. They include
Faroudja DCDi Cinema HDMI upscaling to 1080p, and the DTR-7.9 also
includes component video upscaling to 1080i. Both receivers feature
onboard decoding for the Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS
Master Audio lossless audio formats specified for Blu-Ray disc formats.

Like all Integra products, the DTR-7.9 and DTR-6.9 include
comprehensive packages of features specifically tailored to the needs of
custom installers, including Ethernet ports for integration with
Network-based control systems such as E-Control™ and AMX Device
        Discovery™. These two-zone receivers also include bi-directional
RS-232, RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) system control integration
over HDMI, programmable 12-volt triggers, dual IR inputs, and three
unique assignable IR code sets. The back channels can be reconfigured
for powered Zone 2 or front-channel bi-amping for large speakers.
Because these receivers will frequently be set up by professional
installers, the customized dealer settings can be independently stored
        for easy recall.

The Integra DTR-7.9 and DTR-6.9 are both now available with
manufacturer's suggested retail prices of $1,300 and $1,000
        respectively.

Integra designs and manufactures premium Home Theater receivers,
processors, amplifiers, and DVD players that are specifically designed
to meet the needs of custom audio/video systems installers. Systems
integration and convergence technology protocols include RS-232, IR and
on-board Ethernet for network connectivity and TCP/IP control. Integra

We recently upgraded our forum software and while some of the problems we had were due to the upgrade and fine tuning we had some additional issues with our server setup as well. We have also been the victim of some rather vicious attacks on our server from one or more sources.
Sunday and Monday of this week, we were under a Denial of Service attack.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-servic e_att...

This may not have been only limited to the last couple of days and very well may have been going on for some time now.

I had my provider monitor our server yesterday and he caught an attack on our server by someone trying to close us down. They managed to crash us Sunday night and when we got back up Monday morning they attacked us again. My provider trace down the source of the attack to at least 10 IP's that were targeting us.

We also may have had issues with the Mirror on our Dual Hard Drives so they rebuilt our RAID and updated our Kernel on our server. This will hopefully speed things up.

It seems a bit faster to me at this time. Is it loading faster for you guys?

Lastly I would like to apologize for not being on the SPoT as much lately. I have been very strapped for time so I have not been able to participate much. I love the SPoT and I consider you all to be my friends. We recently lost some of our Editors because they felt I wasn’t doing enough around here to support all of you and to support them. It was very sad to see them go but the hardest thing about it was to see people leave who had been with us for such a long time, which I trusted and considered to be friends, who left with such hard feelings towards me.

Unfortunately as much as I would like to put in a lot more time here, due to the time it takes to keep this place going it has seriously impacted my real Job over the years, which I depend on for my livelihood. I have had to spend the last 8 months trying to rebuild that business which has not been easy, especially with the recent slowdown in the economy, which my job as an Estate Planner is closely tied to. I am going to have to continue to keep working on building my business backup so I don’t foresee any improvement in my postings in the forums.

Since the downturn in the economy has also affected the Spot’s sources of revenue, Club Memberships and Advertising from our Sponsors, which is what keeps us going, I had to cut back on paid technical support and have to do most of the troubleshooting myself. So what time I do have, I have to spend it trying to keep the SPoT working and dealing with customer support behind the scenes. I have already put in about 5 hours this morning behind the scenes on troubleshooting, customer service and getting the SPottie Idol Contest up and going. The SPottie Idol Contest had been delayed due to all of the problems we have been having. Starting August 15th, 2008 we will begin the search for our first SPottie Idol. See the other post I made in the Announcements section for the details on this.

On a positive note, I want to thank all those members who have continued to show their support, especially those Editors and Moderators, who volunteer their time, and who continue to cover for me while I have not been able to. If I have been guilty of not supporting you enough or telling you how much I appreciate your support and hard work, then I apologize.

I also want to thank the loyal membership base that have showed their support over the years and continue to do so. Frankly we wouldn’t be here without your support and as long as you continue to support the SPoT I will continue to try to do my best to keep it going and running as smoothly as possible.

While it has been a bit slow on the SPoT lately, summer has always been that way. Hopefully as we head into the fall and the Holiday Season things will pick up. The SPottie Idol contest should be a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing how that progresses. Do you have what it takes to become the 1st SPottie Idol???

PS: An update on Winston.

Winston continues to do well after his spinal surgery where he had 6 discs removed. He is back up and walking on a limited basis. This is a big improvement considering the Neurologist only gave him a 5 percent chance we would ever walk again.

All 11 Puppies which were born the day after Christmas are all well. Most have gone to their homes and we kept a couple as well.

This was another reason this year has been a tough one on me. Teaching Winston to walk all over again and keeping 11 puppies alive. Half where so small when they were born that they were not expected to live. Luckily all 11 are doing well!

First off sorry for the delay in getting the contest started. Due to all the down time we have been having the last couple of months, we had to delay the start of the contest. It is hard to have a contest if the contestants can’t get on to post. So Starting in August 15th 2008 and running until the end of September, the SPoT is going to hold an audition and competition to find the top 10 SPotties, one of which will eventually be crowned the next SPottie Idol!

During the Audition period we are going to narrow down the list to the following 3 groups.

The top 6 Club Members (Paid Members)
The top 2 “Free” Members (Non-Paid Members)
The top 2 “Moderator/Editors”. (Myself Excluded) Since the Editors don’t get paid here and they put in a heck of a lot of work they deserve a shot at your vote and support for “SPottie Idol”.

Those Members who contribute the most in postings to the SPoT and make it into the top categories for each group will be our finalists and move on to the next level. The members will then vote each week in order to narrow down the Top 10 until we get to our 1st Annual SPottie Idol of 2008!

We will have prizes for the top 3 finalists.

This is not the official list as the script is not completely finished at this point and does not make a distinction as far as what group you are in. I am working on refining the lists but I don’t want to delay the contest any longer waiting for the list to be fined tuned. This list is as of August 1st , 2008. When the contest starts I will reset it to August 15th, 2008. It at least gives you an idea of where you are at on a daily basis.

So you have a couple of days to start gearing up for the auditions! Spread the word!
If your membership expired or payment failed there sometimes are issues with the software that may cause problems with permissions not being reset properly. Your Status will be checked and verified by me before the final list of finalists is selected.
