Model number:

2003-10-11 - " It's a small unobtrusive box setting on top of the TV, or in the HT component rack. Visible, but yet invisible, the small with brawn Media MVP is a big box of fun in disguise. MVP meaning Music Video Pictures, or after using it for a while, it's easy for one to use the moniker Most Valuable Player. "

Review:

The nifty little device (with it's own remote), allows the user to play MP3 music files, view MPEG1 and 2 videos, along with JPEG and GIF digital pictures stored on their PC hard drive on the HT setup, or other television sets.

Priced at $99, and now available for the consumer, it is actually an Ethernet set top decoder device. It works via Ethernet networks, or directly from the PC to the MVP through a LAN crossover cable. It was nice to operate the MVP with the remote in the HT room, while the PC stayed in the office. Easy to install the needed cable between rooms, hook up MVP, download the software to the PC, search for video, stills, and MP3 files, and playback.

The remote will allow one to choose individual songs, or play all songs in the file. Same can be done with digital stills, or do a neat slide show. Colors were crisp, clean and natural. Video play back can be paused, fastforward, or rewound via the remote. MP3 playback through the Yamaha receiver was very nice, deserving of repeated playings. Also has a menu for organizing the play lists

Software upgradable, the next software version will include MPEG-4 video playback. One will download the upgrades via the internet. The MVP is equipped with RCA and SVHS out. Running on the LINUX operating system, and powered by a RISC CPU engine (>350 DIMPS), and will function with an Ethernet cable length of up to 300 feet. Playback compatible on any RPTV, monitors, plasmas, etc. One can even control the audio volume with the remote.

PC requirements: Windows XP Home or Professional, Pentium processor 750Mhz or faster. Network requirements: One 10/100RJ-45 port on a router hub or switch, or a crossover LAN cable. The MVP will also work with laptop PC's. MVP is designed to also work in a WiFi or wireless network.

The MVP is a neat little bridging device with purpose, not just for novelty. It's a fun tool for the whole family to use. It's worthy of a four paw rating. If it had component out, it would get five. Despite that, the MVP is still deserving of a place in ones HT equipment lineup.
