Hi, I have a 57F500 and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the contrast ratio was for it? I saw a new Samsung with 25000:1 at BB yesterday and it was brethtaking. There was literally a crowd around it. The picture looked almost 3dimentional and one of the employess said it was due to the "high contrast ratio". So now I am wondering what mine is and if it's just time for another calibration or if I will never reach that image quality with this set. Thanks in advance.
Who said it was that high?? Wait, let me guess... Samsung???
That number is pure BS, and unless you know how it was measured, it's absolutely meaningless.
The standard ANSI method of measuring contrast ratio is to have a pattern of a black and white checker board on the screen, and you measure the difference between a white square and an adjacent black square.
Your Hitachi will measure a contrast ratio of about 100, when measured this way, and I'm sure the Samsung will also be in that neighborhood.
Thank you for the response Chuck. I'm pretty confused now however. This set was at least ten clearer than mine. Was it the 120hz refresh then? I had my set callibrated about 4 years ago, but I wasn't using the DVI at the time, so I didn't have that input done. do you think my set can achieve anywhere near that level of clarity?
I cant help you with the ratio, but yes I saw that same Samsung at Sears, yes it is far better than anything that was on the floor, yes it appeared 3-D, Outstanding picture, no glare and was $2800.

The other great thing about the Samsung is that if you are so inclined to have it calibrated, it can perform to industry specs in all regards of color space and color decoder. It's a great set.
