I am looking to upgrade my Sony KV-34XBR910 which is a 16:9 tube HDTV. My short list is the LED/LCD Samsung UNB8500 46" or the Panasonic TC-PV10 50" or 54" plasma.
For information I have a DirectTV HD DVR (non-TIVO).
My question concerns the Panasonic Plasma and display of "standard definition" programming. In various reviews on plasmas I notice that they indicate display of standard definition signals (including DVD based material) as "poor" or "mediocre". What does this mean? Am I going to be unhappy getting a plasma set? Is this just "poor" compared to HD or "poor" its worse than watching the signal on a non-HD set? What impact does the digital satellite signal play?
Bottom line, there is still a lot of content out there in 480i and I have a lot of DVD's so what is meant by "poor"/"mediocre" standard definition processing?
Thanks to anyone with insight

Well, the poor and mediocre ratings are subjective of course. I would imagine that they are in relation to how a HD signal looks.
I will tell you this. Standard definition DTV will not look impressive on any HD capable set. You will see a lot of compression artifacts. I find that it looks worse on digital sets than CRT-based sets. I guess mainly because the image on digital sets can be made sharper. Of course it will look better if you normally sit at a distance of 8 or more feet from the display.
Bottom line.......standard DTV is just painful to watch on any HD capable set. Just way too much MPEG2 compression.
BTW......WELCOME TO THE SPOT !

Just be careful with the Standard Definition if you choose to watch those broadcasts with the black bars on the sides.
After years of my kids watching the Family channel in SD, those black bars have now burned into my plasma, and now when I watch HD hockey, I can see the burned in bars on the white background of the ice surface.
Needless to say, I changed the aspect of all my SD channels... everything is in full screen now!
